The installation of NewMass cooling system which was part of a recent project undertaken by H A Marks at Brentfield Primary School, Neasden, has been announced as the award winner in the ENERGY EFFICIENT PRODUCT OR INNOVATION category at the recent 2018 CIBSE building performance awards.
The NewMass cooling system created by BuroHappold Engineering’s Gideon Susman is a low energy cooling system comprising an array of finned tubes that sit below the ceiling of an occupied space. The tubes are filled with a phase change material (PCM) that passively absorbs excess heat from the space by changing from a solid to a liquid.
H A Marks was one of a number of Key Contractors, Engineers and Specialists who were brought together including Buro Happold and ICE Architects to design, cost, manufacture and install the NewMass System. The BMS technology was provided and installed by industry leaders Lloret.
The system was tested in two rooms; the ICT suite and the ‘Red classroom’ and its operation was monitored over a 12 month period to assess performance and energy savings and was completed in 2014.
